TB is a very common issue for Women In Need, when dealing with women who have HIV. These women can be treated. However, Sangita represents the difficult challenges ahead. She had drug-resistant TB, for which there is no treatment. Found alone, living in the ruins of an unfinished house, the charity tried to get this young lady hospitalised immediately for her condition. But no hospital in Nagpur, private or otherwise, was prepared to admit her. No matter how much persuasion was made, Leah and Usha were met with absolute refusal. Sadly, WIN had no alternative but to treat Sangita in the ruined building, because of the risk of infection and no means of hospitalisation. Bringing food to her daily, Leah, Usha and WIN’s medical staff bathed Sangita and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. Sangita died May 2009 in the very place where she was found. This is not good enough! As a charity, Women In Need prides itself on helping those who no one else is interested in. This story underlines the reason why we need to raise enough money to build our own hospital facility to treat such women, rather than have them perish in such terrible conditions. |
